Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This tale of discovery takes us on an intercontinental road trip to visit the last place Atlantic salmon were seen in the Antipodes. The writer was intrigued by "the most enduring and intensive effort" ever undertaken to introduce a wild species. It confirmed that Atlantic salmon are perceived as an important resource even in areas where they do not occur naturally. In the process, he highlights the country's natural splendour and fantastic fishing opportunities, as well as the warm hospitality of New Zealanders. The stunning imagery of photographer Val Atkinson adds a primal quality to the piece.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

The story was executed on a very small budget, and written from the experiences of the editor who visited New Zealand on vacation. While travelling through the South Island, he managed to research and find the concealed location of the last remnants of transplanted Atlantic salmon stock.
