Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

It was 9pm on a Saturday that North West River and Sheshatshiu decided to evacuate. The offices for CBC Labrador were empty, everyone was enjoying their weekend. It was through word of mouth the news about the evacuation spread. Tony Dawson, normally the morning show host, came into the studio. Peter Cowan the tv VJ headed to North West River which is 45 minutes away. Within an hour and a half of the evacuation notice CBC Labrador broke into network programming with what would become two straight hours of live programming. In the studio producer Chris Harbord tried to track down very busy officials and coax them on the air while Tony Dawson hosted and operated for himself. They relied on Cowan and reporter Colleen Connors who was at the Labrador Training Centre where evacuees were checking in to provide the latest information from the field. During the two hours there were more than a dozen guests, people like the Mayors of the communities, the RCMP, Forest Fire Fighters, Meteorologists and regular people who just picked up everything and had to leave. The broadcasts provided survival information during a chaotic time when many people didn't know where to go or what to do. For time constraints this is a 10 minute edited version from that broadcast taken from the live recording.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

In total four journalists were involved in this. There was no time to get up to speed, it was just break into programming, start talking and find out what's happening as it happens.
