Short explanation of the story and how it developed: I was following this land use dispute as part of my editorial duties for Atlantic Forestry Review, and saw the potential for a broader story that would be of interest to a general readership. I discussed this with Dirk van Loon, the editor of Rural Delivery, and he agreed to accept the piece, which is really a hybrid of reporting and personal essay, acknowledging the crossover between my private life and values and my role as a journalist. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: Some of the background research was done as part of my part-time editorial job for Atlantic Forestry Review, but this piece was contributed on a freelance basis, and I claimed no expenses for it. |
