Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This story became one of the most widely-reported sports stories in Canada during 2012. When the Canadian Men's Olympic Relay Team missed out on a bronze medal due to a technical disqualification, a young boy in Paradise, NL, reached out to the team in a way that moved people across the country. His heart-warming gesture was eventually repaid by the Olympic team members themselves, who flew to NL in the middle of a hurricane in order to express their gratitude personally. Zach Goudie was the first journalist to interview Elijah Porter, the first to broadcast this amazing story, and the only journalist invited to accompany the Olympic relay team when they made their surprise visit to Porter's front door.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Reporter Zach Goudie and camera-operators Bruce Tilley and Paul Pickett collected most of the tape for these stories. A CBC videojournalist in Toronto provided technical support for an interview with a guest in Ontario. St. John's Newsroom producers contributed editorial oversight.
