Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

1.MISDIAGNOSED PATIENT - The story is about a family looking for justice after the death of their mother/wife. June Abbott died only hours after being sent home from the emergency room at the Gander hospital. The doctor that saw her was criticized for her treatment by the province's medical watchdog. But her family wanted much more. We took the report from the medical association and did extensive interviews with the family about what happened that night and then in the months following. We went to great lengths to make contact with the doctor after he moved to Manitoba to insure he had a chance to respond. We also went to great lengths to find pictures of him for our story. 2.AQUACULTURE - As part of our 20th anniversary coverage of the cod moratorium we went to the Bay D'Espoir region to show how people have adapted to life after cod. 20 years ago people were worried there'd be no future in the fishery. But now the move into aquaculture is paying off big time. Salmon is king now. The prosperity is everywhere. 3.FLYING COWBOY - Most people are lucky if they manage one career they love. In Gander, we meet a man who's had two. And they are very different. John Landry was an award winning Canadian country music singer when he switched gears and decided to become a military search and rescue helicopter. But he didn't give up his first career. It was fascinating to watch how he juggles both.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

1.MISDIAGNOSED - Producer's Peter Gullage and Mike Rossiter in St. John's gave siginificant assistance in the development of this story. There was also input from the CBC Assignment desk in Winnipeg. Editor Gary Quigly in St. John's also helped shape the final edit before it went to air. 2. AQUACULTURE - This was physically a tough slog. Two trips to the area. The first involved a visit to the hatchery in St. Alban's and then a drive over the peninsula to catch a small boat for the trip from Hermitage to Gaultois and McCallum to visit the farms. Then back down for day two for the tour of the Harbour Breton fish plant. A very challenging shoot for one person. But magnificent weather made it a pleasure. I slept very well. A lot of negotiations to coordinate and get access. Worth every minute. 3 - FLYING COWBOY - Videotaping in a helicopter is always very challenging and very rewarding. Choper audio is always a challenge and after many attempts at it I think I finally have a recipe that gets results. I spent many months negotiating a trip the trip in the helicopter with Landry. The military bureaucracy was in full force throughout. I also spent a lot of time chasing down video of his appearance at the Juno Awards and getting high definition copies of his music videos. I worked with a producer at The National on the script.
