Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

A century after the ocean liner sank off the coast of Nova Scotia, raw emotion and intense public scrutiny still swirl around the greatest marine disaster of the modern age. When the massive ship sank, news of the tragedy was carried by these newspapers. It is only fitting, then, that The Chronicle Herald undertook a large-scale multimedia project to shine new light on the tragedy. The project - at www.thechronicleherald.ca/titanic - gathers the best of online reporting, alternative form storytelling, graphics, video, features, searchable databases in a one comprehensive, compelling and educational site. The Chronicle Herald published a book as part of the multimedia package and also sent a reporter and photographer on a memorial cruise where they submitted stories and photos online and live-Tweeted anniversary events.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Planning began in earnest six weeks before the anniversary; $5,000 was spent on the anniversary cruise.
