Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

There are always exceptions to the rule, but it can be argued that a boy’s relationship with his father has a profound effect upon what kind of man he will grow up to be. Recollections of one’s dad is a universal force that abides, one way or another, in the psyche of all grown men. Men of all ages love to recall, and tell stories about, what their fathers were like, and things they did with them—especially the great fishing trips they had when they were young. As the story reveals, the author doesn't have any recollections of fishing with his father, for he was not an outdoorsman. Nevertheless, his father introduced him to fishing in his own way. The story is a treasured recollection of what that was. Artist Andrew Scotland interpreted the memories of Hugh McKervill and the indirect way his father turned him into a lifelong angler.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

The Atlantic Salmon Journal publication department is comprised of an editor, assistant editor, and art director. Stories and images are often solicited from freelance writers and artists like Hugh McKervill and Andrew Scotland. The magazine receives funding from the Canada Periodical Fund.
