Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This 10-page special edition of Salon was created to recognize world-renowned New Brunswick photographer Freeman Patterson ahead of a special tribute gala hosted by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. That Patterson had authored dozens of popular books about his life, career and art, Salon was left with the challenge of telling Patterson's story unlike it had ever been before. Our approach was to use page design and a variety of page elements to organize Patterson's images to highlight the various key components of the artist's philosophy. For the articles, images were sourced from the thousands in Patterson's archive to create a variety of narrative features. Photographs were also selected to best illustrate any of the text that was compiled from interviews as well as three decades of Patterson's own writing. For the main feature, the designers collaborated with Patterson to create a photo essay exclusive.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

More than a month of work while carrying out regular duties as editor of the weekly Salon section (Landry) and paginator for Brunswick News (Schrick). Collaborate with the National Film Board; Goose Lane Editions; the Beaverbrook Art Gallery; cartoonist Colin Smith; the artist himself; Landry read every single one of Patterson's books (more than a dozen); enlisted two columnists; Landry reached out to numerous former students for letters.
