Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

On the evening of February 19, shots were fired outside the university recreation complex in St. John's. Police were attempting to apprehend a suspect who was under surveillance. The suspect tired to get away and that's when shots rang out. VOCM's Fred Hutton was first to report that the shot was fired by police as they attempted to stop the suspect, who drive a vehicle at the officer. Danielle Barron then did live reports from the shooting scene and later from police headquarters after police found the getaway car torched In a field.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

The story was essentially delivered by two people, Danielle Barron and Fred Hutton. Fred worked from the newsroom and Danielle was reporting from the shooting scene. Technical assistance for the live broadcasts from police headquarters was provinces by Greg Smith. From start to finish, the live updates lasted for about 4 hours.
