Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

In his inimitable, evocative way, our columnist Alec Bruce treats one of the great, tragic incidents in the recent history of Moncton, N.B., sensitively, thought-provokingly and memorably. When three RCMP officers were shot and killed in June 2014 by a disturbed and armed gunman, the city went into lockdown. Bruce, a resident there, was one of 135,000 people warned not to leave his house until the manhunt produced the perpetrator. Instead, he ventured throughout his west-end city neighbourhood to get a sense of how people were feeling. The result was this wonderful column on resilience in the face of adversity, warmth in the face of the cold, dark truth of local terror, and courage in the face of violence and uncertainty. “We are more than this,” he writes. “We don’t imagine ourselves as trapped and vanquished creatures of either blind chance or malevolent design. We choose to be here. We will always choose to be here.” The words resonate wherever barbarity raises its ugly head. And we, for one, will always choose to read them. Especially, from this timely and talented commentator.
