Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The subject of this story had been through the wringer in her career and personal life. She had been a single mum for many years, an entrepreneur and, in 2013, a precariously perched business owner looking into the chasm of potential failure. Frankly, we weren’t sure she wanted to talk to anyone. Then, we assigned our Contributing Editor Alec Bruce to write a feature profile of Anne Whelan, CEO and sole shareholder of St. John’s-based Seafair Capital. Alec spent hours with Anne talking about her experiences, travails and triumphs. They established a respectful rapport. And, in the end, there was trust. The result was a marvellous piece about a woman who never gives up, regardless of the odds – a bone fide tattered-rags-to-hard-won riches story. “And yet,” Alec writes, “now in March 2014, sitting in her office in St. John’s, where a fresh 10 centimetres of late-winter snow covers the port city like a tarp, she’s not complaining. She’s not whining. She is merely reflecting, in the way that successful CEOs do when they’ve been tempered and forged by fire.” Forged by fire, indeed. Alec deftly and elegantly recounts how that fire begins, continues and likely ends in the belly of an Atlantic entrepreneurial woman who refuses to be doused by doubt.
