Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This is the story of “the new dairy oligarchy” in Atlantic Canada – as I have coined it – examined from a business point of view. Dirk van Loon, publisher/editor of Rural Delivery magazine, asked me to investigate if (and, if so, how) the changing ownership structure of the regional dairy processing sector would affect dairy farmers (especially market for their product) and consumers. This is his explanation of how it came about: "There were so many changes taking place and pending – amalgamation, sale, purchase, (new) organic (products), etc. We hoped that with (Rachel's) help we could present readers (farmers in other commodities as well as consumers in general) with a better understanding (of the) possible implications of a rapidly changing market.” I developed the story from copious interviews with farmers, milk processors, and industry groups across Atlantic Canada. Apart from points of government and industry policy, the information and analysis in this story derive almost entirely from these interviews and not from other journalists' published work. To the best of my knowledge, this is the most comprehensive business coverage of this evolving story, which is of regional significance. RB. (Note: Dairy farming and milk products were the focus of this issue of the magazine.)
