Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

January 13, 2015 To Whom It May Concern: If there is a sacred cow in PEI it is the judiciary. So when Kate McKenna delved into the record of PEI’s Court of Appeal her findings made compelling and exclusive reading in the small, independently owned Eastern Graphic of Montague, PEI. In particular, McKenna shone a bright light on the court’s dubious record of using a legal technicality to over-turn virtually every sexual assault conviction that has come before the court in the past decade. McKenna also wrote about the strong patronage connection between the court and the federal government. She also compared the workload of Island jurists to other appeal courts in the country. Serving on the PEI Court of Appeal may be the best job in the Canadian judiciary. McKenna spent months researching the court’s record, cultivating contacts within the legal system and piecing together this three part series. Kate’s work exemplifies the vital importance of an independent press to challenge public institutions. I believe the entry is worthy of your consideration. Sincerely, Paul MacNeill Publisher
