Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

On Thursday July 30, 2014, I was looking for a feature photo to illustrate one of eastern Newfoundland's heat waves and decided to head to a popular swimming hole in Manuels, about a 15 minute drive from St. John's. When I arrived, the small river was full of kids and adults playing in the water and the few waterfalls nearby. I shot some photos of the kids jumping in the water and sitting under the waterfalls. Some kids were swimming underwater so I took out our GoPro camera and tried to get some underwater shots. Hanging over the edge of the rock ledge and dipping it underwater wasn't working as well as I'd liked so I decided to get into the swimming hole myself. I hadn't planned on getting in so I was wearing pants and a T-shirt. I sat in the swimming hole for about 45 minutes getting the images I wanted. This one of the girl blowing a bubble just as she surfaced was our front page photo.
