Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

The documentary The Come-from-away Investor was developed as part of a CBC NS project, Rural Reckoning. It examined the survival, challenges, and success stories of rural Nova Scotia. Our research echoed concerns found in the Ivany Now or Never report, that negative attitudes towards newcomers may be hindering opportunities and economic development in rural areas. This documentary used an extreme example, in which an outsider has invested millions in developing an array of businesses in a small, remote NS community, to look at instances of this kind of attitude, and the potential impact. For the first time in this documentary the Toronto investor speaks candidly about his experiences of being harassed online and made to feel unwelcome even as he made a major contribution to saving the town from continued economic decline.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

This documentary was produced without any additional resources. The research took place during "stolen moments" over a period of five weeks. The Guysborough tape was gathered in one day and the supporting tape in another afternoon.
