Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This is the story of 83 year-old Don Greening from Musgravetown, NL and his daughter Lynn. Don went from watching his wife struggle with memory loss for decades to dealing with his daughter's diagnosis with the same condition. His wife passed away three years ago, and that same year Lynn moved back home. I spent a few days with them and captured their current hardships and all that they’ve come to grips with. It was always clear to me that the main focus was Don's strength of character… and his musical talents, which are woven throughout the story. Don is an amazing singer, and has never recorded a single song. So, I brought some of my own studio equipment along and recorded a bunch of songs in his living room. I challenged myself to present these songs in the most meaningful way I could, pairing them with themes of the story. I knew from the get go I had some pretty special tape to work with, so I was very patient in the process of listening and choosing what made the cut.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I used a work station at CBC in Charlottetown to put the piece together. I used Dalet to edit and mix the tape and a sound booth there to record my narration. I also used INews to write my script. I made use of the space, off and on for about two weeks. Once the script was written, the show's producer gave it a vet, with a few minor edits. I did all the mixing and editing on my own.
