Short explanation of the story and how it developed:The Acadie-Bathurst Titans, a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team, have been rather mediocre in the past. To get a better understanding of the situation, editor Patrice Côté dove deep in statistics. He spent months collecting and tabulating all sorts of data on junior teams across the country from 2008 to 2015. He also compiled data on socioeconomic factors in different hockey towns. He then analyzed the data, did calculations and produced standings in five different categories. That became the backbone of a major series published over five days in May and June 2016. In that body of work, Côté helped sports fans from Northern New Brunswick understand why their beloved team struggled so much. Included in this submission are the five parts of this story. If you must chose one, we respectfully suggest you take the one published on May 31st, 2016.
Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:Patrice Côté, a staff editor at l’Acadie Nouvelle, worked on that story from August, 2015, to May, 2016. He spent approximately 100 hours researching and compiling data, then spent close to 30 hours writing the series of stories. All of that was accomplished on his own time and fueled by his passion for hockey, as he is an editor (not a reporter). The stories were then edited and published by colleagues. No expenses other than salaries were incurred.
