Short explanation of the story and how it developed:Saint John’s once-bustling Main Street was in slow decline for decades - until the owner of 33 rental properties went bankrupt in 2015, fast-forwarding the attrition into a startling, dramatic free-fall. Over several weeks, I documented the swaths of derelict buildings and the people still living there - and helped uncover the story that hundreds of these neglected properties were poised to change hands in a move that would transform the neighbourhood. CBC NB rolled out the story as a comprehensive media-rich feature story, plus photo gallery, and three interlocking profiles of north end residents. I searched the land registry for data which we turned into an easily-navigable chart, accompanied by photos, video, and solid writing. I also wrote and voiced a TOV used on social and embedded in the profile stories.
Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:I gathered the interviews and images and wrote the text for the stories over the course of several weeks while also working on an early morning shift as a radio news reader. I used a Canon rebel T1i to take the photos. I wrote the text that appears in the body of all stories. The TOV that appears in the profiles was produced with the help of an editor assigned to CBC NB's online unit. The packaging and layout was done in conjunction with a copy editor and a senior producer, also members of CBC NB's online team.
