Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

I arrived at the scene of a motor-vehicle pedestrian accident after 9 p.m. and saw several people being treated for injuries in ambulances. Police were also securing the scene and speaking to the driver of the car involved in the incident. I took photos of the scene but I stayed close to the officer and driver because I suspected there was more to the incident than just an accident. Within minutes, the officer placed the driver in handcuffs and read him his rights and caution. I changed my position so I could capture the officer and suspect as well as one of the victims being treated in the back of an ambulance. After speaking to witnesses and listening to the officers, I determined that the driver had apparently deliberately run over three pedestrians. The male driver was charged later that night with dangerous driving and assault with a weapon (his car) in connection with the incident. He has since been charged with attempted murder.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Starting in January 2016, The Telegram has dedicated one of their photographers, myself, to be dedicated night and weekend breaking news photographer. The shift requires working flexible hours of mostly nights and early mornings but with essentially continuous monitoring of fire department and EMS radio channels as well as social media to identify local breaking news events. This is a direct result of that endeavor.
