Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This breaking news debrief on CBC News Mainstreet was the culmination of 3 days work by Jean Laroche. On Saturday December 3rd Jean was the first to alert the weekend crew in Halifax to the decision by the Nova Scotia government to keep students out of schools on Monday. Jean worked through the weekend and continued his coverage Monday as the story developed. On Monday Jean was at the legislature when the government decided students would return to class the following day. Only 30 minutes later he was live on CBC Mainstreet breaking the news that students would return to class in a debrief that included not just the news but also the context from his continuing coverage through the weekend.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

In terms of newsgathering, Jean was supported on Monday by a producer on the assignment desk and a pair of reporters who were also working on our cross-platform coverage. For this particular hit, jean was supported by the producer of Mainstreet as well and Mainstreet host Bob Murphy.
