Short explanation of the story and how it developed:For our annual year-in-review cover story, we explored the breakneck pace of development in the city, and the ongoing tension between heritage and innovation. The story considered how large-scale new constructions are changing the face of Halifax, often leaving citizens feeling alienated and unable to influence the process. With this illustration, regular contributor Derrick Chow artfully depicted that tension, contrasting soaring new edifices with the idea of a pastoral historic city. Complementing the image, is the much debated cover line “Halifax will never be the same”—a statement of fact, and a succinct summary of many readers’ fears.
Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:We were fortunate to get to work with illustrator Derrick Chow, despite the very limited budget available ($250) for the project. He saw our vision for the cover, understood our budgetary limitations, and was excited to be a part of telling the story visually.
