Short explanation of the story and how it developed:John Scott captivated the hockey world in 2016. A former NHL brawler, fan voting earned the 6'8, 260-pound forward a spot in pro hockey's biggest showcase - the National Hockey League All-Star Game. The decision was controversial, causing friction between both fans the NHL executives. Scott, though, showed class throughout the controversy - endearing himself even more to hockey fans and his on-ice contemporaries. Ironically, big John Scott wasn't even in the NHL when he earned a trip to the all-star classic. Instead, he was in the minors, playing for the American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps. He actually wore the IceCaps jersey at the NHL Skills Competition. The story resonated with fans in this province and made small-town St. John's a part of this global story. The former goon, of course, would eventually emerge the hero, playing a starring role with his skills not his fists. He would score a pair of goals and, when the final buzzer ended, he was carried off the ice by his NHL teammates. It was a sports story that truly had it all. And he shared that story with a smile from St. John's.
Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:Mark Dwyer and cameraman Tony Barrington. We also used footage from the all-star game and footage from his games with the IceCaps.
