Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

As the first anniversary of “extratropical cyclone” Fiona approached in September 2023, Saltscapes’ editorial team asked senior contributor Alec Bruce to consider how he would cover the impact and aftermath of what many meteorologists said was the first major storm in Atlantic Canada directly attributable to global climate change. Bruce suggested that to do justice to the substance and relevance of the story – one year later – he should look at it from the perspectives of those who experienced it and its effects on the ground. Fiona not only brought climate change to the front doors of real people in Atlantic Canada, he said; it also affected them in many different ways. He decided to interview across a spectrum – a cottager, a coastal homeowner, conservationists, and commercial fishers – and present their stories in a series of discrete vignettes. This approach allowed him to tell each of their intimate stories naturally, fully and sensitively, which, in turn, built a persuasive case for the resilience, adaptability, and creativity of the region’s people in the face of, arguably, the greatest challenge facing all of us.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Bruce spent approximately 36 hours on the phone and in video conferences, conducting more than a dozen interviews (for background and attribution,) and another 24 hours to craft the elegant series of five vignettes that became “There will always be another Fiona.”
