Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

“When Atlantic Business Magazine editor Dawn Chafe first suggested David Hawkins and his 50-year career might make an interesting profile, I confess I was a bit skeptical. The story seemed more where-are-they-now nostalgic than one that might speak to contemporary concerns. And then I met him. David Hawkins’ ad man career — created out of nothing and nowhere — not only spanned the era from Mad Men to today but he also had much to say about the business history of Atlantic Canada. But what was most interesting to me — and I hope our readers — was the reality that Hawkins wasn’t simply looking back at a 50-year career well spent but continuing to reinvent himself and plot his next ‘political statement’ while mentoring a next generation of entrepreneurs.”— Stephen Kimber
