Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

APTN followed the ongoing rallies at Muskrat Falls closely for months. Dozens of Innu and Inuit faced charges for breaking the court injunction. I had long conversations with Innu Elder Bart Jack about the history of Innu resistance. And while those who broke Nalcor Energy’s injunction were criminalized by the judicial system, Jack saw it as a necessary fight for a way of life. It wasn’t a first fight for the Innu, and Jack said it won’t be the last. We had flown to Labrador from Halifax to cover ongoing court proceedings. And when we found file footage of Bart Jack himself being arrested in the 1980s over protests against NATO’s low level flights…we knew we had a great story on our hands. In part, this story was about being on site and capturing events as they unfolded. It also was the result of making contacts in the community and taking the time to listen. And making a great effort to track down footage in the CTV archives – always a challenge when meeting daily deadlines.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

The flights, transportation, accommodations, per-diems and salaries were the only cost to the newsroom.
