Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

When 12 players on the same team were injured in one high school football game, forcing the team to forfeit the game, reporters Sean Hatchard and Sarah Seeley began a series of stories delving into what happened, the league's concussion policy and its reaction, especially when a second game, involving a different team, was forfeited for the same reason. That led Hatchard to write this analysis piece looking into the state of high school football, concerns over head injuries and what needs to be done to keep young players safe.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

What began as beat coverage expanded to involve teamwork with reporter Sarah Seeley, a RTI request for school board emails and interviews with parents, coaches and officials that involved evening and weekend work outside regular shifts.
