Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Patricia Garnett was sexually assaulted by her father as a teen, became pregnant and gave the baby up for adoption. Now 45, she cares for dolls as she would a real baby to deal with the trauma. She is known in Saint John as the “doll lady” and says she is often bullied when people do not know her story. Her caretaker, Leah cares for her baby Dominick in the background. Patricia loves having a real baby in the house and refers to him as her ‘little brother.” I met Patricia in 2013 through my photo project "Humans of Saint John" and decided to spend time with her to tell a more intimate story of her life while working as a freelance photojournalist in Saint John.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I published this photograph of Patricia with the CBC but did not get any resources from the organization. Patricia told me that she wanted as many people in Saint John as possible to hear her story and as I believed the CBC would be the best way to accomplish this goal, I gave up receiving monetary compensation because having her story shared widely was important to her. The story was shared more than 10,000 times through the CBC.
