Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Saltscapes regularly includes a “meet your farmer” feature in each issue. We do that because no-one else does. Our readers get to read a profile of the folks who grow their food. One of the major questions facing the farming community, and the industry generally, is the future of the family farm and whether it can sustain in this age of industrial farming. We concentrate in this series on those people. Increasingly we are seeing young couples getting into farming, but with a new, modern and innovative take on things. Of particular interest is their common philosophy and overall integrity with regard to organic products, environmental sustainability, community matters, society in general and their commitment to family. This has come as something of a surprise. This profile of a young farming family is particularly poignant in that regard. It’s written by an author who is very much in line personally with those lifestyle choices and personal values—and it shows. Readers responded very favourably to this young family. They reported being impressed, inspired and made to feel more positive about the future. That made us feel good.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Like most magazines Saltscapes use the services of freelance contributors. We provide travel expenses as necessary and advice and guidance in the creation ifs the story. This piece catalogues the writer's personal philosophy and could not have been authored so sensitively by anyone else.
