Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

It’s a lifestyle to which very few of us could begin to relate in any meaningful way—yet it’s well within living memory. Lighthouses were, of course, until quite recently, an indispensable element of marine navigation, especially along a hazardous coastline like ours. The folks who manned them—and their families—were obliged to live solitary lives in harsh environments. Their stories, therefore, form a significant element of our history and culture. In magazine article terms, this piece has it all—a fascinating story deftly written, human interest in spades, humour, a little pathos, and a lot of relevant history. It’s a fascinating and compelling read. The graphic design offers a rocky background to set the mood and juxtaposes antique black and white snapshots with modern colour. The history of the location in question is presented in sidebars so as not to interrupt the flow of the narrative.

Like most magazines Saltscapes use the services of freelance contributors. We provide travel expenses as necessary and advice and guidance in the creation of the story.
