Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

St. Thomas University made some regrettable choices in 2008 - they gave too many profs tenure status. Right after, enrollment started declining, leaving the university with too many over-qualified researchers and not enough profs to teach first year. So they started depending on part-timers. John Muise was one. He was the only prof who held class outside and he was the only one to teach Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Fight Club in the same class. One day, he was called into an office and was told that STU was cutting three first-year English classes. And he happened to teach three first-year English classes. So effectively, he was let go. There was an outcry from the students. Muise was the soul of the English department, and now a stuffy 60-something will be trying to teach a bunch of teenagers about the duality of man without Tyler Durden.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I was the editor-in-chief at the time. I wrote this story in a day while editing and supervising layout and all the rest of it. I was also trying to stay fair to the university while reflecting how the student body feels. It was really hard to get in touch with a guy who doesn't own a TV or phone - not to mention email. So the biggest challenge - aside from trying to stay unbiased as an ex-student - is actually reaching Muise.
