Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

It was a live social media chat between students that Scott-Wallace stumbled across when she learned of a teen trapped beneath a car. What a change in times when Facebook trumps the police scanner. When the reporter arrived this petite teen was still trapped, run over by her own car as she was taping a school project. This was such a sensitive story to write in the days that followed because the father, who the reporter had a connection to through the volunteer fire department in his rural community, was no hesitant to speak. His daughter was simply unable to be interviewed as she drifted in and out of consciousness, but he opened up about her future and the anticipated loss of her scholarship, and her recurring nightmares. This was a story that required a tender touch by the reporter to convince this very shy father to open up when he really just wanted reporters to go away. The Kings County Record is a two-person newsroom.
