Short explanation of the story and how it developed: "Our Children, Our Legacy: The Fight for Innu Education" was a live-to-air radio show hosted by Anthony Germain from the Innu school in Sheshashiu. The idea for the show grew from Anthony's knowledge of and research into developments in Innu education. It focused on the Innu people's inspiring struggle to preserve their unique culture through education; it showcased their efforts to create an educational system that honors their traditions and language, ensuring that future generations maintain a strong connection to their heritage and offered a compelling look at how this remote community is working to build a brighter future while staying true to its past. With so many negative stories about Indigenous people in Atlantic Canada and residential schools in the past, the show wanted to shine a light inside some Indigenous classrooms of the present where there is optimism and hope. |
