Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The idea for this story came from a discussion with members of the N.L. Shipwreck Preservation Society, who were looking to bring attention to the shipwrecks in Conception Bay,and the deadly toll exacted by German U-boats in N.L. waters. Society member Neil Burgess offered CBC an opportunity to come along during a dive, and the timing couldn't have been better. The weather and sea conditions were better than perfect, and Burgess is an incredible storyteller. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: The timing of this story (a Saturday assignment) meant getting approval for overtime for two CBC employees, which was quickly approved by management. The station had also recently invested in an underwater drone, which opened an incredible window into the focal point of our story: the shipwrecks. |
