Short explanation of the story and how it developed: STORY 1: 240523 EN INSPIRING NL This story was a very special one of 2024, and I aired it for my feature - Inspiring NL. Nicole Kieley, the Deputy Mayor of Mount Pearl, was in a life-changing accident in 2023, losing one of her legs. For about a year after, Kieley kept very much to herself. Taking time off council and adjusting to her new life. I reached out to Kieley just before the one year anniversary of her accident. She advised me she would be going for a walk, and also returning to city council that day. I walked with her and filmed as she marked that milestone moment of going for her first big walk since losing her leg. I then followed her to City Council that evening and filmed her return. It was incredible to join Kieley and hear her heart warming story of resilience. In terms of development, it took a while to get a hold of Kieley but once we chatted over the phone a little we made it work. I filmed this on my own the day before it aired, edited on my own the following day and aired that evening. STORY 2: 240711 EN INSPIRING NL This story was a part of my summer tourism series "Talk of the Tiny Towns". Talk of the Tiny Towns is all about going to rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador and highlighting the hidden tourism gems. During the summer months I change my weekly feature from Inspiring NL, to Inspiring NL: Talk of the Tiny Towns. For this particular story, I was in the small town of Cowhead; home to the Gros Morne Theatre Festival every summer. This festival is so important to Newfoundland and Labrador as it has been a long standing tradition in the province for decades. The show I went and captured during this particular night was extra special to this province as it showcases songs wrote by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians - Neddy Norris Night. The shows creator is also from Newfoundland and Labrador. It was an incredible performance of acting, singing, jokes and more. This story was filmed during 10 days of straight filming during a tour across Newfoundland and Labrador. Story 3: 240814 EN LUCKY 7 RETURN TO SEA The Lucky 7 story started in July, 2024. 7 fishermen from NL spent more than 50 hours floating in a life raft on the Atlantic Ocean after their fishing vessel caught on fire. Nobody would blame any of these men for never heading back out to sea. But it's a way of life for these fishermen, and the sea called them back. This particular story was not even two full months since their traumatic rescue at sea, two of 'The Lucky 7' were heading back out for a catch of shrimp. After covering the story of The Lucky 7 extensively in July, I drove back out to New-Wes-Valley to catch back up with Captain Eugene Carter and Deckhand Toby Peddle in August, and I even went out for a quick catch with them on boat. I drove out to New-Wes-Valley that morning and spent the day with Eugene and Toby. The following morning I drove back to St. John's (four hours) and edited this piece for the NTV Evening Newshour that night. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: Story 1: I shot, wrote and edited this piece on my own. The biggest obstacle here was all the moving parts. Joining Kieley for a walk and filming while trying to give her space, finding our old footage of her accident from a year ago and then filming her return to council that evening. The following day, May 23, 2024 - this story was wrote, and edited by myself and aired that evening within 8 hours. Story 2: A lot of time and resources went into filming this piece. During a 10 day period in June, I left St. John's and drove all the way to L'anse Amour, Labrador (a 10 hour car ride and hour ferry ride to Labrador) and made my way back down the province - visiting a bunch of tiny towns on my way. This particular story was filmed the same day as another. I filmed a story in Lanse aux Meadows that morning (3 hours and 45 minutes away) and then drove to Cowhead to catch the Gros Morne Theatre Festival that evening. Other than gas for the vehicle, no other funds were used. I shot this story on my own. On July 11, 2024 - I wrote and edited this story to air that evening. Story 3: In regards to time and resources for this story, there was money used on gas to travel out to New-Wes-Valley. For time purposes it took me four hours to drive out there, I then went out on a fishing boat with two fishermen for about 5-6 hours in total. I drove back to St. John's (4 hours) the next morning and had very limited time to edit and turn around this piece. I got back to St. John's around lunchtime on air day. Time quickly counting down to air time. I wrote and edited this piece on my own and it aired that evening. Everything I have submitted was shot on my own, and only had one day to edit in most cases. |
