Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

At about 11:15 p.m. on December 20, 2024 firefighters with the St. John's Regional Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador. When firefighters arrived there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the home. All occupants of the home escaped the fire unharmed, however for a time a cat was unaccounted for. With most of the fire knocked down, crews went in search of the family pet. Pictured is SJRFD Firefighter Andrew Bragg (right), carrying the missing cat from the home, preparing to hand the animal to Fire Captain Greg Stanford. The animal was given oxygen at the scene, and returned to its owner. NTV News would learn the animal made a full recovery from the ordeal.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

NTV Photo/Videojournalist Earl Noble responded to the fire, leaving his home and traveling roughly fourteen kilometres to the location of the fire. After gathering visuals and information at the scene, Earl returned home to edit photos/video, upload, and publish the story to the NTV News website. In total, roughly four hours were required to cover this story.
