Short explanation of the story and how it developed: Like most photojournalists, we are looking for a different view of everyday life. Over the 39 years of working with firefighters of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, I've gained the trust of the firefighters, platoon chiefs as well as the fire chief and this trust has allowed me unprecedented and exclusive access to scenes that only one other colleague in the city has. Both myself and this colleague have been allowed to work closely, both physically and mentally, with the men and women of the department. This photo was obtained because of that close relationship. Not all fire photos need flames and smoke of course and this one stood out so much that a platoon chief on scene pointed it out to me just as I noticed it myself. Debris can be seen flying through the air as the firefighter rips apart building material to look for any hotspots at a house fire. |
