Short explanation of the story and how it developed: It started with a storm on Christmas Eve in 2022, wild weather that I continued to film over a two and half year period. Chronicling weather events throughout parts of Northern and Western Newfoundland, the film shows what happens when a storm hits. Fishermen run to their fishing sheds and wharfs. Tying up thousands of dollars worth of gear, waiting and watching as storm surges rage. Washing away their life’s work, roads, and culture. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: I filmed this project on spec (on my iphone without money) and pitched it to CBC Here and Now. At that time (winter 2023) their executive producer signed off on a contract, and one-time airing of the short film (with a payment of $1750). Footage: storms, interviews, research was gathered over a two and half year period. |
