Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

“Power, passion, and place” by Trevor J. Adams, Dec. 24. This began as a simple retrospective on the work of New Brunswick poet Alden Nowlan. The challenge was how to do something different that readers hadn’t seen before. The answer came when Trevor discovered a Toronto musician who isn’t just inspired by Nowlan, but is actively evangelizing for him, setting his poetry to music and triggering a resurgence of interest in his work. Decades after his death, this story provides a new perspective on the legacy of one of Canada’s greatest wordsmiths.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

This story was produced in-house by an already-busy editor but because we’re passionate about CanLit; took the time to dig deeper and find an original story, while juggling deadlines.
