Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The familiar saying that you never know what’s going on in someone’s life came to mind with the story about Yassir El-Tahan and Jonathan Hannaford. They first met on what might have been Hannaford’s worst day ever: he was in a mental health crisis, and ending his life was on his mind. He ran into El-Tahan, a physiotherapist, and it turned out that their encounter had enough of an effect on Hannaford — who would soon be reported missing — to change fate. When Yassir El-Tahan told CBC producer Caroline Hillier about how he’d like to tell this story, Caroline hired him as a freelancer and guided him in gathering the content, and then in writing the documentary, and Caroline did the final sound mix. This feature compelled and inspired audiences, perhaps because of Yassir’s unique storytelling. |
