Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

For months, we followed Marie Webb, a fashion designer with Down Syndrome, as she prepared for New York Fashion week. We wanted Marie's voice to be prominent, and it was integral to the themes of the doc (authenticity, artistic voice, being true to yourself), but she can be hard to understand. Marie’s mother, Renne, has always naturally repeated things Marie says, which helped in the editing process and allowed us to keep Marie’s essence. We were very deliberate in editing sections of her interview because we could easily lose Marie's authentic voice. It reiterated just how important it is to give space in our journalism to hear people as they truly are. Listener feedback showed that this story resonated.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

Dave and Emma had about 2 weeks in total to work on this doc, and Caroline worked with them for 3 days, vetting the script, and doing the final mix of the doc.
