Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

This story came about because of relationships of trust I have built with both First Nations and commercial fishery leaders over many years covering this dispute. I went down to Saulnierville to speak to First Nations fishers directly and members of the Acadian communities of Clare, feeling their voices were not getting heard in the dispute. I learned of the deal that had been, along with the glimmer of hope its failed enactment may hold for the future while down there. Then had to convince both former Sipekne'katik Chief Mike Sack and UFCA pres. Colin Sproul to speak about it - they both were only willing to speak, if the other also spoke. So it required some back and forth on my part to get them both on board with sharing what had happened.

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story:

I left my home in Antigonish that morning at 3 a.m. for Saulnierville - a six hour drive away. The interviews on the wharf with First Nations fishers, members of the local community, and leadership of both sides were done by 11 p.m. I wrote the story the next day in my car on the side of the road, stopping at one point to charge my laptop and eat at a restaurant.
