Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

On the eve of Terry Ryan's 47th birthday, the former NHLer was celebrating the day ahead. But one phone call changed everything. A depleted Newfoundland Growlers lineup left the ECHL team scrambling for talented, amateur talent. Who, the team wondered, could fill in on short notice, playing at the pro level? Terry Ryan, the former NHL first round draft pick, was their choice. It had been two decades since Terry played his last pro game, and about three decades since the Montreal Canadiens selected him as their first round pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. At 47, it seemed impossible but, well, Terry Ryan was ready for the challenge. He'd return to the pro game, for a one game stint, playing in front of his daughter for the first time ever and giving hometown fans a little taste of what made him a junior hockey star. Not only did Terry play for the Growlers but he'd drop the gloves in a spirit fight and earn third-game all-star honors. It was a moment to remember and a career highlight for a man who spent his life chasing his hockey dream. The moment earned national headlines and respect from the hockey world... and a few tears of happiness for the man of the hour.
