Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

Through covering local court every week, we often hear about issues in the system. In this case a man who had been arrested and held on remand told the judge he’d gone weeks without being allowed to speak to his lawyer or family. The judge said such delays are unacceptable. A probation services employee also said another man went several months without being able to speak to his daughter. Restrictions on who inmates were allowed to call meant their families sometimes didn’t know where they were for weeks. A few days after the first story was published, OmbudsPEI and the provincial jail announced changes that would allow inmates to call anyone except the subjects of no-contact orders.
