Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The story of Jennifer Brady’s struggle with health officials to treat her lymphedema came to reporter Angela MacIvor’s attention when her lawyer sent a short news release about her MAID application. It went to most media outlets, but we were the only outlet to call. After the initial story aired and made national headlines, Angela MacIvor followed the judicial review decision as well as its impact on Brady and others with lymphedema and similar conditions. The Premier apologized to Brady for being dismissed by the province. He committed to funding her future treatment, reimbursing all of her previous expenses and he asked the Auditor General to do a review of how out-of-province healthcare claims are handled. This spring, Brady is scheduled for surgery – paid for by the Province of Nova Scotia – in New Jersey. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: Angela spent two full weeks on the initial story from the date of the first interview with Brady until the air date. We did local and national versions for radio, television and online. Aside from production, most of Angela’s time was dedicated to fact-checking Brady’s account with documentation. Angela also reached out to doctors in other jurisdictions and combed through audio recordings of the judicial review hearings. Senior producer Angela Gilbert vetted all of the work. We used existing CBC resources and work was completed within regular business hours. |
