Short explanation of the story and how it developed: I was attending a music concert in Carbonear, NL, an hour outside St. John's, that night when a person nearby, a volunteer firefighter, whispered in my ear that police were swarming a neighbourhood in Harbour Grace as part of a murder investigation. I immediately left the concert (and my husband) and drove to the area. I was the only reporter from any media on scene and while I wasn't permitted near the home where officers were focused in a standoff, I was able to get footage with my phone. I called for a cameraman to meet me there and I was able to get reaction from residents. Three murder suspects were taken into custody, leaving people in the normally quiet neighbourhood scared and confused. I returned to the courthouse the next day, where the suspects made their first appearance before a judge. |
