Short explanation of the story and how it developed: A century after Titanic sank off the coast of Nova Scotia, raw emotion and intense public scrutiny still swirl. When Titanic sank, news of the tragedy was carried by these newspapers. It is only fitting, then, that The Chronicle Herald undertook a large-scale project to shine new light on the tragedy. The centrepiece of our project was published on April 14, 2012 and included a bold graphic that was the entire Page 1 of The Chronicle Herald. This marked the first time a graphic took over the front page of our paper. The aim was to bring perspective to the large number of lives lost. That page led readers into our Titanic supplement which included stories about local connections, national viewpoints, legacies, a walking map and a list of events. The front page of the supplement and its centrespread featured a compelling story and stunning photo about the Unknown Child. The design is clean and quiet and lends dignity to the content. |
