Short explanation of the story and how it developed:

‘It is written’ (June 18) was the result of Mike Landry’s concern about what he felt was a dearth in First Nations literature in New Brunswick (half a year later the Idle No More movement would highlight such ignorance of First Nations culture as being a national concern). Looking into the issue locally, he uncovered the story of Lorne Joseph Simon and arranged to have the late Mi’kmaq writer’s out of print novel sent to him. The book was an incredible forgotten find that set Mike Landry off to uncover why it was unknown. As a result of Mike Landry’s interest in the novel during his research, the publisher, Theytus Books, confirmed that they would re-publish the novel. Mike Landry’s research offered the contacts for Simon’s family to facilitate the new edition, and the front-page art he had commissioned for the cover of the story (by First Nations artist Dozay Christmas) may be used to illustrate the book, which is scheduled for release this year.
