Short explanation of the story and how it developed: The cover fulfills our intention to portray the beauty, grace and power of an Atlantic salmon, and to illustrate the proper techniques of live release, especially the importance of keeping the fish in the water. The image is also meant to encourage the underrepresented demographic of women and youth in the sport to try Atlantic salmon fishing. Once "hooked" on the sport, they will understand the importance of conserving this iconic species. Jean-Guy Beliveau is a Gaspé-based photographer who also works as a river warden. This superb photo of a smiling female angler releasing an exceptionally large fish shot in such close proximity, speaks volumes to the knowledge, technical skill and patience of the photographer. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: The Atlantic Salmon Journal is published quarterly and has a small staff of two, an editor and advertising manager/assistant editor. They have a window of about two months to put together an issue. Services such as graphic design, layout, production, translation and printing are provided by external sources. Photography and editorial content are commissioned on a freelance basis and paid according to a schedule of fees. Remuneration for a cover image is normally between $350-$500. The ASJ is a membership publication of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, a non-profit conservation organization. |
