Short explanation of the story and how it developed: This half hour is a perfect example of why local radio works. It first provides survival information for Saint Johners on a breaking news story, then explains that story in detail in our newscast. It also provides an indepth and comprehensive walk-through of a major news story that has captured the curiosity of a city and, in fact, the country. Augmenting our 3 person morning show team (Host, News Anchor, AP Tech) with a reporter (Matthew Bingley) that morning, we were able to capture and update information of a developing fire as it happened. We were first on the scene with both radio and video capabilities, allowing us to identify the correct church (other media did not). As firefighters were containing the fire, the neighbouring businesses and homes, as well as morning rush-hour traffic, were all affected. Contrasting the spot news was a researched and informative talk tape. The Richard Oland case is the highest-profile unsolved murder case in Canada. Our reporter Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon combs through the details and puts the police investigation, now a year old without a suspect named nor charged, in the spotlight. A song to breathe, then FTR from our Premier about the fate of an ill Saint John man (perhaps the fate of many in our province) with long term illness. Wrapping up our half hour is a strong newscast with an on-scene account of the fire and further news from around our city and province. |

Resources of the newsroom (money and time) available to complete the story: This particular show was well balanced in pre-produced content (debrief and FTR) as well as live chase. While the show itself was put together the day before by Producer and Associate Producer (8 hours), the breaking news was chased immediately by all three members of our morning show and then picked up by our VJ. Balancing information and tone is achieved, while attention is split in many different directions. |
