Short explanation of the story and how it developed: What should have been a fairly typical news day in New Brunswick shifted with the weather – literally. The first taste of winter hit the province after what had been a several weeks of mild temperatures. To tell the story, we incorporated visuals from the hardest hit area – Fredericton. Global Meteorologist Trevor Adams then took the story bringing viewers up to date on current conditions and what to expect through the evening hours. Global’s videojournalist Laura Brown completed the coverage with a wrap of the storm and its impact in the province. A story Global Maritimes has been following is the proposal to extend a pipeline from Alberta to New Brunswick. The idea gained momentum during the Keystone Pipeline controversy in the U-S when the Alward government said it would gladly accept and refine Alberta crude. Global’s Emily Baron Cadloff updated the story as the leaders of the opposition threw their support behind the possible project. The New Brunswick Evening News at 6 also brought two news stories of the season. Global’s Brion Robinson examined how shop owners in the Moncton area were protecting themselves from shop lifters, while Global’s Tino Makris took a look at how to be green when it comes to decorating your home with Christmas lights. The newscast also included the ongoing story of two Australian radio hosts who were behind a hoax on the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge for morning sickness – a hoax that ended in the suicide of the nurse who took the initial phone call. And a story about a unique art display at the region’s largest international airport. The December 10, 2012 New Brunswick Evening News at 6 began with a morning conference call at 8:30 am between the Assignment Editor in Halifax and the five staff members of the three New Brunswick bureaus – Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton. During this meeting all story ideas were put out for discussion as to relevance, merit and importance to the audience. Discussions also included the visuals and interviews needed. The Producer then lined up the newscast, adding elements such as web pushes or other graphic requirements. Both the Producer and Assignment Editor worked with the reporters throughout the day ensuring the best possible product was put to air. |
